Dance performance provides a unique lens through which to view public gardens and plant science. Choreographers, dancers, and program producers will share the successes and challenges of bringing site-specific modern dance to a public garden. In 2018, the United States Botanic Garden (USBG) piloted a new dance performance project by bringing in a local modern dance company to create an original work demonstrating the diversity of orchids during the orchid exhibit. This program brought new audiences to the Garden and allowed the USBG to share its mission of demonstrating ways in which plants are important to the well-being of humankind. Participants will find new and creative ways of amplifying public garden missions and experiences by engaging in conversation with local artists about bringing modern dance to their organizations.
