Arborists working in conservatories and glasshouses face unique challenges to even the best climbers. This session will take place over two full days (Monday and Tuesday) of the conference, offsite at the United States Botanic Garden (USBG) conservatory. Participants will learn hands-on proper rope installations, safe climbing gear for climbing and rapelling inside conservatories from floors, catwalks, superstructure to access trees, safety tips and rescue techniques. Sessions will cover basic anchoring, rope tying, and climbing techniques, testing skills, and improving anchor point identification.

Participants with a basic to advanced understanding of arboriculture and pruning, will gain more extensive training in climbing and pruning in glasshouses. Ken Palmer, with USBG Arborists, will provide specialized techniques for areas that are inaccessible to typical equipment such as lifts, ladders, or pole pruners.

Please note: All participants should bring: a climbing helmet, safety glasses, a climbing harness, climbing rope, carabiners, a lanyard, and any gear preferred for ascent and descent. Participants should have at least one year of climbing experience. Anyone interested in attending the workshop who does not have the required gear and/or experience should contact Tommy Rosenbluth,, for information on a possible exception to the requirements.
