The National Tropical Botanical Garden has two garden properties (McBryde Garden and Limahuli Garden) on Kauai which suffered from large flood events in April 2018. Kevin Houck will explain how using GNSS technology and a Living Collections map, they were able to do a full inventory of the affected area of both gardens over the course of several months using field teams from a variety of sources. Triage identified damaged and destroyed collections and permanent tags were attached to surviving plants. Data collection assisted with restoration and replacement. Attendees at this session will learn to take an all hands on deck approach to a disaster by utilizing GIS technology, pro-active labeling practices, and a diverse, driven field team.
